Noorda Engineering, Applied Science, & Technology Building
Weber State University | Ogden, Utah
This state-of-the-art $50 million building on the Weber State University campus totals 137,000 SF. Complete with classrooms, offices, and laboratories, the facility is home to the departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and the School of Computing and Sales. As part of a community partnership, the building also has science and engineering classrooms for the Utah’s early college high school, NUAMES (Northern Utah Academy for Math, Engineering, and Science).
As the electrical engineering consultant for the project, Envision provided electrical engineering services to power and meet the needs of specialized laboratory rooms and equipment, lighting requirements, and acoustical considerations for spaces where working laboratories/machinery and classroom learning co-exists. We were able to achieve a calculated Lighting Power Density (LDP) of 0.46 Watts/SF while providing all required light levels for the labs and indirect lighting to highlight the building systems in the open ceiling. Envision’s coordination with Rocky Mountain Power (RMP) Wattsmart program helped provide over $11,000 in RMP incentives.
The building design features exposed architecture to purposefully showcase the engineering systems that make the building work; and Envision provided diagrams for windows and walls near electrical systems for this purpose. Additionally, a large glassed-in server room is central and visible as the hub to showcase computing systems within the building and glass walls for laboratories and classrooms provide inspiring insight into the academic programs within.
