Banyan Dining Hall

Brigham Young University - Hawaii | Laie, Hawaii

Envision Engineering provided a full range of electrical engineering services for the design and construction of the new Banyan Dining Hall located on the BYU-Hawaii campus in Laie, Hawaii. This two-level cafeteria building spans approximately 30,000 square feet. The new facility was strategically positioned adjacent to the existing cafeteria, which was demolished upon the completion of the new building.

In addition to electrical, lighting, and acoustical design services for the new building, Envision’s scope included the design and coordination of basic demolition of the existing cafeteria's electrical systems, site lighting, and communication equipment, as well as providing temporary power during the transition.

One of the most significant challenges for this project was the corrosive island environment, which necessitated special consideration for the selection of electrical components and materials. Another aspect of the project was the design of a generator backup system to ensure that power would be available in the event of a power outage.

Envision also provided in-depth coordination for the kitchen areas, where specialized electrical systems were required to support the unique equipment and operational needs of the cafeteria. Additionally, given the large, open design of the dining hall with its high ceilings, acoustical consulting was an important component of the project. Envision worked on several key aspects of acoustical design, including environmental noise evaluations, sound isolation reviews, and room acoustics.
