Elizabeth Delong School
Utah Schools for the Deaf & Blind | Springville, Utah
The design and construction of this $12.7 million, 32,000 SF building produced a highly thoughtful and effective learning environment for children K-6 who are blind/ visually impaired or deaf/hard of hearing. The award-winning school includes a deaf-blind classroom with added sensory and mobility considerations, therapy spaces, sensory spaces, library space, gymnasium/cafeteria with performance space, life skills demonstration area, training room, audiology clinic, and administration spaces.
As the electrical engineers for the project, Envision collaborated to provide particularly thoughtful and intentional design to meet the needs of the students. For example, lighting design features include natural light as well as the ability to switch the frequency between warm and cool light to make it easier on visually impaired eyes. The project team also carefully considered acoustical design in classrooms to minimize distracting noises from HVAC units and vents as well as minimizing the sound of other classroom distractions, like a tapping pencil or other inherent noises, which can distract or dominate the concentration of impaired students.
