Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal Redevelopment & On-Call Services
Salt Lake City Department of Airports
Envision began work as one of the only local electrical engineering firms for this $5 Billion project to construct a new international airport from the ground-up—one of Utah's largest construction projects ever. The 10-year project to construct an entirely new international airport terminal and concourses adjacent and within an active airport was a massive architectural, engineering, and construction undertaking.
For the Terminal Redevelopment project, our comprehensive role included construction administration, in support of the architect, HOK, for the installation of all electrical systems to power the massive airport and its vital operations. Envision also designed fire alarm systems for all new airport buildings and provided full-service electrical engineering for the new 1 million SF parking structure, car rental quick turn-around facility, and car rental services building. Envision also designed all on-site medium voltage power distribution and telecommunication duct bank for both landside and airside facilities. Power and lighting design was also provided for the landside, except the lighting design for the main roadway up to and directly in front of the terminal, which was performed by HOK.
In addition to modernization and increased capacity for growing travel demands, energy efficiency and reducing operating costs was a primary goal for the Terminal Redevelopment project. To meet this objective, Envision continuously innovated throughout the project and achieved LEED Gold Certification for the parking structure. Features included converting all airline ground service equipment to electric and equipping the airport with energy-saving evaporative cooling towers. The automated baggage system beneath the airport was designed with variable speed motors to run real-time rather than continuously; and lighting design incorporated daylight-harvesting LED fixtures throughout. Through Envision’s efforts, the project received local utility incentive monies for lighting.
The new terminal successfully opened on time and began welcoming travelers on September 15, 2020. The project received Utah Construction and Design Magazine’s” Building Project of the Year” award (2020).
Our services continue today as subsequent expansion phases of the Terminal Redevelopment project continue at the airport.
In addition to, and separate from the Terminal Redevelopment Project, continuously since 1998, Envision has been the on-call electrical consultants to service the Salt Lake City International Airport. Among the numerous electrical engineering tasks and projects that have been completed throughout this 26+ years on-going contract, of note is Envision's recent innovative design of electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) at the economy and employee parking lots, the new parking structure, and for fleet operations. In addition to EVCS design, in 2022, Envision was commissioned to provide a planning study to determine the number of future charging stations needed for the airport in multiple phases from 2023 through 2034. Envision is honored to be an integral team player for innovative, sustainable, and energy efficient electrical engineering planning and design services to support the growth at the state-of-the-art Salt Lake City International Airport.
