BYU-Hawaii Married Family Housing

Brigham Young University—Hawaii | Laie, Hawaii

Envision Engineering provided a comprehensive suite of electrical engineering services for the new married family housing development on the BYU-Hawaii campus in Laie, Hawaii. The project included the design of electrical systems for a total of eleven three-story apartment buildings, which house one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. The development also incorporated two pavilion areas to serve as gathering spaces for residents.

Envision’s role involved careful planning and coordination for each phase of the project, ensuring that electrical systems were integrated efficiently across the various building types and layouts. To accommodate the expansion while simultaneously maintaining housing for current residents, the project was completed in phases.

A key challenge of the project was the necessity of maintaining power and communication services for the existing housing units during the construction phases. To address this, Envision’s team conducted a thorough analysis of the existing utility infrastructure, including power and communication lines, and worked closely with utility providers to develop a strategy for temporary re-routes and extensions of these services. Envision’s team also provided detailed electrical design for the new apartment buildings. Special consideration was given to the environmental factors in the design, ensuring the materials and systems used would offer longevity in the corrosive coastal conditions. In addition, Envision offered innovative solutions to meet campus design standards plus offered creative procurement scheduling for transformers and other long-lead-time electrical gear to keep the project on schedule.
